AJS & MATCHLESS 1957-1966 WORKSHOP MANUAL ALL MODELS SINGLES & TWINS

Author: Floyd Clymer
ISBN: 9781588502582
VP Book ID: 20145
Pages: 186
Dimensions: 8.25" x 10.75"

Description: 186 pages, and more than 150 illustrations and charts, size 8.25 x 10.75 inches. This manual is a compilation of three original AMC factory publications. 1) A 108 page 'Workshop Instruction Manual' for the 1957-1964 Lightweight and Heavyweight singles and the twin-cylinder models. 2) A 12 page 'Supplementary Instruction Book for Competition Models' and 3) A 60 page 'Instruction Book - Workshop Manual' for the AJS Models 14 and 8 'Lightweight Singles' that is also appropriate for the Matchless G2 and G5 equivalents.

While the reprint of the original 108 page AMC workshop manual states that it is appropriate for the 1957-1964 models, it actually covers the entire line of AMC 250cc, 350cc, 500cc and 600cc Lightweight and Heavyweight singles and 500cc, 600cc and 650cc twins manufactured by AMC through 1966 (see below). Please note that it does not include the 750cc AMC G15/33 or the 750cc Norton/AJS/ Matchless G15 hybrids. Owners of these 750cc hybrids are directed to the 'Norton 1966-1970 Lightweight & Heavyweight Twins' workshop manual ISBN 9781588502421, as it includes significant maintenance and repair information on those models.

While the single cylinder machines are always considered the backbone of AMC's post-war production, in 1948 they introduced a 500cc twin-cylinder, the AJS model 20 and Matchless G9. However, it was 1956 before that singular model was joined by the introduction of a 600cc model 30 and G11. Subsequently, a number of additional 500cc, 600cc and 650cc twins were added to the product line in 1958. Owners of the 1956 and earlier twins are directed to workshop manual ISBN 9781588503121 which covers the 1948 to 1956 twin-cylinder machines.

Owners of the 1956 and earlier AJS 350cc 16 and 500cc 18 Series and Matchless 350cc G3 and 500cc G80 series Heavyweight Singles are directed to workshop manual ISBN 9781588503138 which covers both the rigid frame and swing-arm touring and competition models from 1945 to 1956.

Unfortunately, by the mid 1960's, along with most British motorcycle manufacturers, AMC was struggling to compete with the flood of Japanese imports and, by 1966, the AMC conglomerate had collapsed. While the reason is mired in mergers, finances, consolidation, politics and worker unrest, both the AJS and Matchless name continued onward, under license, until early 1970, at which point both marques were history.
